Four Bees Pitchers Combine to Shutout Starfires and Get New Britain to .500
By Sam Trumbley
(New Britain, Conn.) The New Britain Bees shut out the Westfield Starfires 4-0 on Wednesday night, fueled by nine innings of two-hit ball from four different pitchers. The Bees improve to 15-15 on the year, and have now won six of their last seven games.
Garret Garbinski (UConn/Clinton, CT) started the game for New Britain and maintained his 0.00 ERA with three scoreless innings, totaling four strikeouts and allowing two hits. He extended his scoreless streak to 13 innings from the start of the season.
The Bees struck first, stringing together three singles in the bottom of the first inning. Jack Kane (St. Joseph CT/West Hartford, CT) hit the third to drive in Colin Crowley (Winthrop/Southington, CT). An error from the Starfires’ third baseman allowed Kane and Easton Masse (Boston College/Manchester, CT) to score, putting New Britain ahead 3-0.
Zach Seigrist (Concordia/Beaumont, TX) extended the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the fifth after driving in Kane from second base. The RBI single marked the first run batted in of Seigrist’s Bees’ career.
James Tobin (Salve Regina/North Haven, CT) threw five hitless innings in relief of Garbinski, striking out five and walking three. Evan Mello (Wheaton College/New Bedford, MA) struck out two in a scoreless seventh inning, and Zach Zajac (RPI/Cromwell, CT) closed the door with a clean top of the ninth. The Bees pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts, walking five. Garbinski was the only pitcher to allow a hit, and the Starfires were held hitless beyond the second inning.
Kane reached base three times and led the team with two hits, also stealing two bases. Six other Bees also recorded a hit. Kane and Seigrist both tallied RBIs on the night. PJ Hughes (Richmond/Manhattan, KS) finished the game with two walks.
New Britain’s defense was mistake-free, recording zero errors behind Garbinski, Tobin, Mello, and Zajac.
The Bees will look to continue their hot streak at home against the Bravehearts on Thursday, July 3rd, before heading on the road for Fourth of July Weekend. See below for the link for tickets or visit us at the Box Office before the game!
