NASHUA, NH – 11 Bees players made up a majority of the roster for Team Hikers during Wednesday’s All-Star Game at Holman Stadium. Nine of them played in the game and all made major impacts in what ended up a 6-5 walk-off win for Team Bikers.
Trey Lamay (Stonehill/Washington, CT) got the nod as the starting pitcher and tossed a scoreless bottom of the first inning. Robby Wunsch (UMass Boston/South Windsor, CT) and Colby DiMenna (Western New England/Cromwell, CT) were the other two pitchers from New Britain who appeared in the game. Wunsch tossed two innings and gave up three runs (one earned) and DiMenna was the unlucky loser, giving up a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth when the Bikers walked off. Garret Garbinski (UConn/Clinton, CT) and Thomas Harding (St. John’s/Massapequa, NY) did not make the trip to Nashua and did not pitch.
On the offensive side, all six Bees named to the game were in the starting lineup. Ben Kuja (Brandeis/Madison, CT) was the star, going 2-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Kacin Robinson (Stonehill/East Hartford, CT) had a great day too, going 2-3 with three stolen bases and a leadoff triple in the top of the ninth with the game tied at four. Myles Gythfeldt (Lafayette/Ridgefield, CT) had what looked like the game’s heroic swing two batters later, driving a ball to deep right center for a sac-fly to score Robinson and put the Hikers on top. Deacon Brown (St. John’s/Williamsport PA) had a stolen base after just being named to the roster the morning of the game. George Slauson (UConn/Plymouth, MA) and Tim Hennig (Wantagh, NY) hit in the top two spots of the order for the Hikers, but combined to go hitless.
With the All-Star festivities now in the rearview mirror, all eyes are on the playoff push in New Britain. The “second half” of the season kicks off on Thursday night at home against Nashua, first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. at New Britain Stadium.
