LARRY MICHAELS PRESS BOX: Prior to today’s game, the New Britain Stadium press box will be renamed in honor of the late Larry Michaels. A fixture in New Britain baseball starting with the New Britain Red Sox, Michaels was the longest tenured employee in New Britain baseball history. Michaels passed away on July 7 after a long illness. A plaque honoring Michaels’ contributions to New Britain baseball will hang outside the press box at the New Britain Stadium suite level.
PROMOTIONS: Today is the final home game of 2017, and the New Britain Bees want to thank fans for all of their support throughout the season. Today is Fan Appreciation Day as well as the last Schaller Hardware City Family Fun-Day at New Britain Stadium! Food and merchandise will be discounted, fans can get player autographs before the game, kids 12 and under can take the field during the national anthem, and everybody is welcome to run the bases after the game! The first 1,500 fans through the gates will take home a special giveaway courtesy of KeyBank, and all fans in attendance will receive a voucher to the 2018 home opener!
The Bees: Today is the final home game for the New Britain Bees in 2017. After today, they will head out for a 6 day, 7 game road trip, making stops in Somerset and Southern Maryland. In last night’s game, Jon Griffin hit his 12th home run of the season in the 4th inning for New Britain’s lone run. Greg Nappo pitched 4 1/3 innings, striking out 6 hitters. The New Britain bullpen combined for 4 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, only giving up 3 hits.
The Opposition: Sugar Land scored 3 runs last night, each one of them driven in by a different person. Bryan Pounds drove in one of them, and also had 3 hits on the night. The other two were tallied by Albert Cordero and Cole Gillespie, who brought his home with a solo home run. Starting pitcher Mitch Talbot struck out 8 Bees hitters through his 6 innings of work, only allowing 2 hits, one of them being Griffin’s 4th inning homer. The Skeeters head home after this series to close out their 2017 campaign.
Starting Pitchers – New Britain: LHP Nick Greenwood (4-5, 4.89) | Sugar Land: RHP Alberto Rodriguez (0-0, 3.60)
Key to the Game – 5 or more: In each game of this series against the Skeeters, the New Britain offense has been held to just 1 run, going 1-2 so far in the 4 game set. That one win was their only win when scoring only 1 run this year, generating a 1-21 record overall when that happens. On the season, the Bees have records under .500 each time they score 4 runs or less in a game, but are above the .500 mark whenever they score 5 or more runs in a contest. Look for the New Britain offense to bring the bats to life, aiming for the goal of 5 or more runs and giving Nick Greenwood a lead to work with.
Broadcast: The Bees’ Official YouTube Channel (youtube.com/NewBritainBees) and Facebook Live (facebook.com/newbritainbees), starting at 1:20 P.M.
Song of the Day: Hawk Nelson - Thanks For The Beautiful Memories
