Riordan Wins Sixth, Moreno Goes Yard
(New Britain, CT – August 14, 2019) – The New Britain Bees (12-19, 47-53) defeated the High Point Rockers (18-16, 59-45) 5-2 at New Britain Stadium on Wednesday evening and have now taken two of the first three games of a four-game series in the Hardware City. The triumph for the Bees improves their record to 5-1 overall versus the Rockers at New Britain Stadium in 2019.
New Britain starting pitcher Cory Riordan (6-6) earned the win after allowing just one run on four hits in six and one-third innings pitched, walking and striking out two as the right-hander recorded his second consecutive quality start and fifth overall, tying Rainy Lara for the most amongst active pitchers on the roster. High Point starting pitcher Edwin Carl (3-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering three runs on nine hits (one home run) in six innings on the mound, walking one and striking out five.
High Point took a 1-0 advantage against Riordan in the top half of the second inning courtesy of a two-out opposite-field run-scoring base hit to right off the bat of Giovanny Alfonzo which allowed Quincy Latimore to cross the plate after he opened up the frame with an infield single that hit right off the third base bag. New Britain sent eight men to the plate in the home half of the fifth frame and never looked back, scoring three runs on four hits to jump out in front 3-1, thanks to a go-ahead two-run home run to right produced by Rando Moreno (his first big fly of the season), and a two-out RBI base knock from Jason Rogers that scored Darren Ford after he singled three batters prior to the Rogers at-bat. The Bees added some much-needed insurance after the fans stretched out their arms and legs thanks to an RBI triple from Ford that split the outfielders and went all the way to the wall in right center and a base hit and rib-eye steak by Rogers as the boys from the Hardware City opened up a 5-1 cushion on their way to the three-run triumph as New Britain pounded out 12 hits en route to the victory and also improved to 13-4 in games played on Wednesday this season. Rogers collected three hits for his 28th multi-hit game of the campaign and seventh of the three hit variety. Photo provided courtesy of Meaghan O’Donoghue.
