Two More Hits For Rosa, Including A Home Run
(Waldorf, MD– September 16, 2018) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (24-39, 50-76) defeated the New Britain Bees (28-35, 61-65) 3-2 in walk-off fashion in ten innings at Regency Furniture Stadium on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2018 Atlantic League of Professional Baseball season for both organizations. New Britain drops to an overall record of 6-6 in extra-inning ballgames, including a 2-6 record on the road when free baseball is played.
New Britain starting pitcher Matt Quintana tallied a no-decision in the contest despite firing five scoreless innings on five hits allowed, striking out one batter. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Daryl Thompson also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, allowing two runs on four hits (one home run) in seven innings pitched, walking one while striking out four.
New Britain took an immediate 2-0 lead versus Thompson in the top half of the first inning thanks to a two-run home run launched by cleanup hitter Jovan Rosa, his sixth roundtripper and sixth multi-RBI game on the campaign. Southern Maryland cut the deficit to 2-1 in the home half of the seventh when Francisco Rosario plated Angelys Nina by way of a run-scoring fielder’s choice after Nina opened up the frame with a two-base hit. The Blue Crabs tied the game at two in the bottom of the ninth against Bees reliever Evan Scribner when Craig Maddox allowed Jon Griffin to cross the plate courtesy of a sacrifice fly to left field as Griffin set the table for the late-game comeback with a leadoff double off New Britain’s 2018 Liberty Division All-Star closer. After the visitors were retired in order in the top of the tenth by winning pitcher Devin Raftery (2-0) courtesy of a ground ball out and a pair of strikeouts, Southern Maryland went to work against losing pitcher Chris Reed in the bottom of the tenth (0-3). Franciso Rosario led off with a free pass, and was erased at second on a fielder’s choice hit into by Yuki Yasuda. Edwin Garcia followed with a walk of his own, putting the winning run in scoring position at second base and setting the table for Devon Rodriguez. With the Crustacean Nation fans hoping for some late-inning drama, that is exactly what they got as Rodriguez laced a clean single into right field, allowing Blue Crabs skipper James Frisbie to wave Yasuda home, and the speedy base-runner was able to slide in safely with the winning run despite a very impressive throw to the plate on one hop by Angelo Songco as the curtain came down on the 2018 season with the Blue Crabs registering the one-run victory and their third in extra-innings in the series while handing the Bees their ninth walk-off loss of the season in the process.
