Ford Tallies Three More Base Knocks
(York, PA– August 14, 2018) – The York Revolution (16-17, 48-48) defeated the New Britain Bees (15-17, 48-47) 4-1 at PEOPLE’s Bank Park on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game midweek series in the White Rose City.
New Britain starting pitcher Rainy Lara (8-6) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs (two earned runs) on six hits (one home run) in five innings of work, walking three while striking out four and throwing a pair wild pitches. York starting pitcher Mitch Atkins (10-4) was victorious after six scoreless innings on the bump and just three hits allowed, walking seven and striking out ten along with hitting a batter. The right-hander becomes the first ten-game winner in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
York went ahead 2-0 against Lara in the bottom half of the second inning on a seeing-eye run-scoring single off the bat of Henry Castillo that plated Welington Dotel after he led off the frame by striking out swinging but advancing to first base on a dropped third strike by backstop James Skelton. Following the Castillo hit Michael Burgess (who doubled with one man down) was being held at third base but was then waved home for the second run on an error committed by right fielder Jamar Walton. The Revolution made it 4-0 in their favor in the bottom of the third when Melky Mesa hit a laser of a two-run home run just over the wall in left centerfield, his team-high 14th roundtripper of the campaign. The run support was enough for Atkins, who walked the tightrope in the middle three innings by making the big pitches he needed to as New Britain stranded eight runners on base during that stretch of the ballgame, including leaving the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings alone. The boys from the Hardware City pushed a run across in the top of the ninth versus reliever Ricardo Gomez when Jason Rogers belted an RBI double into the right field corner for his team-leading 22nd two-base hit (second most in the Atlantic League), scoring Darren Ford after he singled with one out. That was the only run the Bees would produce on the evening as the visitors finished the contest stranding 13 runners on base in the defeat while going just 1-12 with runners in scoring position. Ford led the way for New Britain with three hits, his team-leading 26th multi-hit game of the year while also having now reached base safely in 14 consecutive contests.
