Three Extra-Base Hits For Stassi, Tuiasosopo Single Wins It In The 12th
(New Britain, CT– July 24, 2018) – The New Britain Bees (7-6, 40-36) defeated the Sugar Land Skeeters (9-5, 50-27) 5-4 in walkoff fashion in 12 Innings at New Britain Stadium on Tuesday night to take the opener of a three-game midweek series in the Nutmeg State.
New Britain starting pitcher Andy Van Hekken registered a no-decision after allowing four runs on seven hits (four home runs) in seven innings pitched, walking one and striking out four. Sugar Land starting pitcher Matt Sergey also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, surrendering four runs on five hits (two home runs) across five and one-third innings on the mound, walking four and striking out three.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom half of the fifth inning, the Bees got even with one big swing of the bat as Brock Stassi launched a game-tying three-run home run to right centerfield off Sergey, his second big fly of the campaign. New Britain tied the game at four in the home half of the sixth by way of a solo tater to right field produced by Jamar Walton, his ninth of the season. The game remained all square into the bottom of the 12th when the boys from the Hardware City rallied against losing pitcher Pat McCoy (2-1). Brock Stassi led off with a triple off the wall in right centerfield, his third extra-base hit of the evening. Following back to back intentional walks of Deibinson Romero and Jason Rogers, the bases were loaded with nobody out for Matt Tuiasosopo, and he sent the New Britain faithful home happy as he laced a single to right centerfield that scored Stassi, improving the Bees to 5-1 in extra-inning ballgames (3-0 at New Britain Stadium) while also tallying their fourth walk-off victory in the process, making a winner out of Adam Loewen (1-0). Stassi led the way for New Britain with three hits and runs batted in, his 11th multi-hit game of the season and sixth multi-RBI performance in 2018. Photo provided courtesy of the New Britain Bees.
