(New Britain, Conn., Apr. 20, 2018) – The New Britain Bees today announced that Mauro Gozzo has been appointed as Pitching Coach, while Miguel Gomez has been named Hitting Coach of the team.
“We’re exciting to have these two individuals as members of our coaching staff for the 2018 season,” says Bees General Manager Brad Smith. “Along with Wally, Mauro and Miguel are veterans of the game that will bring valuable experience and knowledge to the ballclub.”
Mauro “Goose” Gozzo joins the New Britain Bees staff as Pitching Coach for the 2018 season, which will be his first campaign in the Atlantic League. Prior to joining the Bees, Gozzo has been involved with a multitude of baseball initiatives. He has been a private instructor, teaching the likes of big leaguers Matt Cain and Drew Pomeranz, and also coached a nationally ranked elite competitive travel team in the Connecticut area for nine years.
The New Britain, CT native began his playing career after being drafted out of Berlin High School by the New York Mets in the 13th round of the 1984 MLB amateur draft. Mauro spent three years in the Mets organization before being traded to the Kansas City Royals as part of a deal for David Cone. After a couple campaigns with the Royals organization, he joined the Toronto Blue Jays, where he would make his Major League debut in 1989. The righthander had a six-year big league career, also playing for the Cleveland Indians (1990-91), Minnesota Twins (1992), and Mets (1993-94). Over the course of 48 career Major League appearances (13 starts), he owns a 7-7 record in 124.0 innings pitched.
Across his 12-year playing career, Goose has made 349 career minor league appearances (126 starts). He owns 79 victories with a 3.83 ERA and 692 strikeouts in 1,134.2 innings.
Miguel Gomez joins the New Britain Bees staff as Hitting Coach for the 2018 season. He spent the last three years as an Assistant to the Manager of the El Paso Chihuahuas of the Pacific Coast League, who are the Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Prior to that, Miguel was an Assistant to the Manager of the El Paso Diablos of the American Association in 2013, and also managed the Las Cruces Vaqueros Professional Baseball Team in the independent Pecos League in 2011. He has been involved in baseball since graduation New Mexico State University in 1999.
