24 YEAR OLD BERLIN NATIVE LED BEES IN WINS, ERA
(New Britain, Conn., June 30, 2017) – New Britain Bees team officials today announced that starting pitcher Anthony Marzi has had his contract purchased by the Minnesota Twins organization. He will report to Single-A Cedar Rapids of the Midwest League.
“We are very excited for Anthony,” said Bees Manager Stan Cliburn. “He has worked very hard, and certainly deserves this opportunity. We wish him the very best with the Twins organization.”
A native of Berlin, Connecticut, Marzi joined the Bees prior to the 2016 season on a try-out, making the team out of spring training. During the Bees’ 2016 season, Marzi made his first career start and registered a 23.1 scoreless inning streak, the longest in Bees history. This season, Marzi has made 12 starts, leading the Bees with five wins and an earned run average of 2.84, good for sixth in the Atlantic League. Marzi registered the second nine inning shutout in Bees history, and the only one to date in the Atlantic League this season, on June 14th against the York Revolution. In his final start for New Britain, Marzi tallied his 100th professional strikeout.
This will be the second stint in affiliated baseball for Marzi, who signed with the New York Yankees in 2015 and appeared in 6 games for the Gulf Coast Yankees. The former UConn baseball captain departs New Britain with a career 10-6 record, a 2.94 ERA and 95 strikeouts in 147 innings pitched for the Bees.
In a corresponding roster move, RHP Eric Fornataro has been activated from the disabled list.
The Bees take on the Bridgeport Bluefish tonight to start the final series of the Atlantic League’s first half, featuring a chance to win $50,000 and great prizes from Fat Tire. For tickets, call (860) 826-BEES, visit the New Britain Stadium Box Office, or online at
