BEES ADD THREE TO PITCHING STAFF
FRY RE-SIGNS FOR 2017; SHIMO AND GATES ADDED FROM OUTSIDE LEAGUES
(New Britain, Conn., March 10, 2017) New Britain Bees team officials today announced that the team has re-signed pitcher Brandon Fry for the 2017 season. In addition, the Bees have signed pitchers David Gates and Brandon Shimo after acquiring Shimo from the Winnipeg Goldeyes (American Association) in exchange for future considerations.
Fry, 23, appeared in 38 games, including one start, for New Britain last season, the second most appearances for a Bees pitcher last season. The left-handed native of Canton, Ohio was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 18th round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft, and spent three seasons in the Padres system, reaching high A with the Lake Elsinore Storm in 2015. The 6-foot-3. 195 lbs. left hander has appeared in 93 professional games across four seasons, striking out 109 batters in 141.2 innings.
The 6-foot-2, 185 lbs. Gates spent the last three seasons with the Alpine Cowboys of the Pecos league after being drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 18th round of the 2013 MLB Amateur Draft, 12 spots after Brandon Fry. The Lubbock, Texas native spent the 2013 fall season with the Arizona Fall League Rangers, appearing in 11 games. The 24 year old has appeared in 58 games across four professional seasons, including seven starts, and has tossed 91.2 professional innings.
A native of Jermyn, Pennsylvania, Shimo spent last season with the Goldeyes, winning the American Association championship. The 6-foot-2, 180 lbs right hander has played three professional seasons, all in independent baseball, and has appeared in 98 total games. The 26-year old has struck out 102 batters in 112 innings pitched during his professional career.
“I’m excited to have Fry back for this season, and Gates and Shimo will be an important part of our pitching staff,” said Bees manager Stan Cliburn. “All three players have versatility – they can start or relieve – and they’ll pitch quality innings for us this season.”
With today’s signings, the Bees have announced 14 players for the 2017 season, which begins on April 21st at New Britain Stadium against the York Revolution, with first pitch at 6:35 PM.
