Errors Prove Costly As Bees Fall To Rox 6-4Errors Prove Costly As Bees Fall To Rox 6-4 By Connor Wilson
(NEW BRITAIN, CT) - One game after winning via the mercy rule and throwing a no-hitter, the New Britain Bees fell to the Brockton Rox by a score of 6-4 on Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium. Matt Lauria (Western New England/East Haddam, CT) got the ball for the Bees and struck out six over four innings surrendering just two runs on three hits. New Britain got the scoring started in the second inning when Tanner Santos (Babson College/Bethany, CT) lined a single and Garrett Scavelli (Franklin Square, NY) ripped an RBI triple to right center. Scavelli had a day at the plate, finishing a home run shy of the cycle in the loss and going 3-5 with two RBI. The Bees tacked on two more in the bottom of the fourth to go up 3-0 as Bryce Molinaro (St. John’s/Drums, PA) scored on a wild pitch and back-to-back doubles from John Heitzman (Quinnipiac/Fairfield, CT) and Scavelli. After being no-hit by the Bees on Sunday, the Rox broke out of their slump offensively, scoring four in the fifth inning to make it a 4-3 game. Both sides went quietly for the next few half innings before the Bees tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a sac-fly from Tyler Pettorini (Ohio State/Wooster, OH). Yale teammates Ethan Lewis (Yale/Golden, CO) and Tate Evans (Yale/Flower Mound, TX) each entered in relief and combined to throw four innings allowing two unearned runs with eight strikeouts. Jason Johsnon (St. Josephs ME/Thomaston, CT) came on in the ninth and allowed two unearned runs, but it could have been three if not for a great relay from Heitzman to Pettorini to Jimmy Keenan (St. John’s/White Plains, NY) that ended the inning. The Bees committed three errors that proved costly in the defeat. A late rally came up short as the Bees got the tying run on base after Heitzman and Billy Mrowka (Skyline College/Duxbury, MA) each walked, but the Rox retired the next two hitters to secure the win. The Bees are back in action again tomorrow night as they travel up to Nashua to face the SIlver Knights for a double header starting at 3 p.m. and will be back at New Britain Stadium on Friday when they play host to the Worcester Bravehearts for a 6:35 p.m. first pitch.
