NEW BRITAIN, C.T. -- The Bees lost to the Nashua Silver Knights on Tuesday night 9-8 in a game which saw the tempo swing back and forth from the first inning all the way to the end. The Bees would get out to a big lead, but then Nashua would come scratching back and eventually come out victorious over New Britain.
The Silver Knights were first to get on the board tonight in the top of the second inning when Brady Day (Kansas State) hit a single to drive in the first run of the day in Nashua’s favor. The Bees answered back in a strong way in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs to take a commanding lead over the Silver Knights. Derek Tenney (University of Hartford) tied things up with a single to bring in one run, and then Zach Donahue (UConn) smashed a ball to center field, his second home run of the season, that gave the Bees a 4-1 lead. They capped things off with a solo home run by Kyle Brennan (Endicott College), which was the first time all season that two Bees batters hit back-to-back home runs.
In the bottom of the third inning, Noah Martinez (Central CT State University) hit a solo shot that gave him his fourth home run of the season, and current leader on the Bees. But the Silver Knight comeback began in the fifth inning when Dylan Jones (Franklin Pierce) hit a single into right field that scored Keegan from third base. A few batters later, Luke Beckstein (Kansas State) hit a single into center field that drove in two runs. Dylan Jones hit another single in the sixth inning that brought in another run to cut the Bees lead to just one.
After going scoreless for four innings, the Bees used two singles from Kyle Brennan and Mike Caruso (Fairfield University) in the seventh inning to bang in two runs and finally give some comfort to their lead at 8-5. But the Silver Knights stormed back in the top of the ninth to finally capture their first lead since the second inning. Nick Shumski (Merrimack College) started things off with a two run home run, his second of the season, to bring Nashua within two runs. Then with two outs, Dylan Jones connects once again with a single that drives in the tying run at eight. With two runners on base, Luke Beckstein hit a single into the left field gap that scored the go-ahead run for Nashua. The Silver Knights closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth inning to capture their 20th win of the season.
The Bees started Emmet Sheehan (Boston College) who pitched 4.1 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits, while also striking out six Nashua batters. Four different pitchers also saw action for New Britain, including Ben Talbot (Holy Cross) who received the loss after giving up the four runs in the final inning.
The Silver Knights started Josh Roberge (Wheaton College) who struggled out of the gates, pitching only 3.2 innings and giving up six runs on four hits. Shaun Cormier (New England College) received the win after appearing in the eighth inning and Brandon Dufault recorded his first save of the season.
The Bees drop to 12-20 on the season, while the Silver Knights improve to 20-12. New Britain travels to Nashua for their final meeting with the Silver Knights on Wednesday night. First pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from Holman Stadium.
