Nashua Uses Walk-Off Single to Defeat Bees

NASHUA, N.H. -- The Bees traveled to New Hampshire for tonight's matchup with the Silver Knights and came one out away from taking the game into extra innings.  Nashua won 3-2, with a walk-off single from Nick Shumski (Merrimack College) in the bottom of the ninth inning.

bats had a quiet night with the first run of the game not coming until the bottom of the fourth inning when Luke Beckstein (Kansas State) hit a solo home run to give the Silver Knights a 1-0 lead over the Bees.  This was Beckstein’s first home run of the season.  Although New Britain was able to strike right back with a run of their own when in the top of the fifth inning, Nashua’s pitcher, Patrick Harrington (Assumption College) threw a wild pitch to allow Matthew Donlan (Stonehill College) to score from third base.

The Bees were able to grab the lead in the sixth inning when Griffin Arnone (Elon University) hit a deep solo home run that put New Britain up 2-1 over Nashua.  This was Arnone’s second home run of the season, both being on road games.  The Silver Knights were not down long though, in the bottom of the seventh inning when Nick Shumski hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Luke Beckstein from third base and putting both teams at two runs a piece.  The Bees got one runner on base in the ninth inning, but were unable to convert it into any runs, allowing Nashua to come up and possibly win the game.  That’s just what they did with two outs and a runner on second base, Nick Shumski hit a single into left field that gave Luke Beckstein enough time to score.  Beckstein scored all three runs for the Silver Knights.

The Bees started Alex Price (Middlebury College) who received a no decision after pitching 6.1 innings and giving up two runs on five hits, along with five strikeouts and four walks.  Ben Talbot (Holy Cross) recorded his third loss of the season after giving up the walk-off single to Shumski in the ninth inning.

The Silver Knights started Patrick Harrington who had a solid performance on the mound, pitching 7.1 innings and giving up two runs on five hits.  Steven Miller (Penn State) received the win from his one inning out of the bullpen in the top of the ninth inning.

The Bees drop to 11-18 on the season, while the Silver Knights improve to 18-11.  New Britain returns home to face the North Shore Navigators for the second time in three days.  The Bees won on Friday night against the Navigators, 6-1.  First pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from New Britain Stadium.
