Drew Mead Throws Ten Strikeouts to Defeat the First Place Navigators

NEW BRITAIN, C.T. -- After losing at home to the Navigators on July 5th, the Bees returned the favor tonight in North Shore by winning this one 3-2.  New Britain’s starting pitcher, Drew Mead, was a major factor in tonight’s victory shutting down the first place Navigators.

The Bees were able to collect two early runs in the top of the second inning when Ryan Bagdasarian (Eastern CT State University) stole second and the Navigators shortstop, Cody Morissette (Boston College), was unable to catch the ball allowing Andrew Cain (University of New Haven) to score from third base.  The next batter, Kyle Brennan (Endicott College), got on base with a single hit into left field that brought home Ryan Bagdasarian to take a two run lead.

The Navigators were able to clap right back in the bottom half of the second inning with two runs of their own.  Peter Burns (Boston College) hit a grounder into right field but Logan Bravo (Harvard University) was able to score all the way from first base due to an error by Kyle Brennan when the ball got underneath and rolled past his glove.  A few batters later with runners on second and first base, Jonathan Luders (Seton Hall University) hit a single towards Brennan again in the outfield and Cam Climo (UMass Lowell) was able to score.  That would tie the game but be all for North Shore tonight.

Although Kyle Brennan had some miscues in the field, he would give New Britain the lead in the top of the fourth inning when he flew out to centerfield for the sacrifice fly bringing home David Howarth (Northeastern University) from third base.  New Britain took a 3-2 lead and were able to keep the score as it was for the rest of the ballgame.

New Britain’s starting pitcher, Drew Mead (Marymount University), pitched a gem in his second appearance against the Navigators and this time North Shore had no answers.  Mead went seven innings, the most of any New Britain pitcher this season, giving up only two runs on four hits, walking two batters and striking out a season high 10.  Mead gave up all four hits in the second inning, and then proceeded to allow only three more baserunners the entire game.  Tyshaun Diaz (Southern CT State University) collected the first save of the season for any Bees pitcher, coming into relief for two innings and allowing only one hit and striking out two batters.

The Navigators started Jack Wallace (Franklin Pierce University) who pitched four innings, giving up five hits and three runs, along with one walk and three strikeouts.  Tom Chmielewski (Princeton University) and Griffin Green (Virginia Tech) were the other two pitchers to see action tonight for North Shore.

The Bees will return to New Britain for a two game home stand Wednesday night and face the Nashua Silver Knights.  In the previous matchup back on July 8, Nashua was able to shut down New Britain, defeating the Bees 10-1. First pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Click Here For Tickets.
