By Connor Wilson
(NEW BRITAIN, CT) - Playing under the lights at New Britain Stadium for the first time this season, the New Britain Bees defeated their in state rival Norwich Sea Unicorns 10-9 in a slugfest on a beautiful Saturday evening to advance to 4-0 on the young season
The Bees hit a season high two home runs in the win, as Bryce Molinaro (St. John’s/Drums, PA) connected on a longball to left in the first and Christian Scanlon (Merrimack/West Haven, CT) hit a go-ahead grand slam to right in the fourth.
New Britain starter Brian Hart (Hofstra/Queens, NY) struggled with command early on, as he hit three consecutive batters in the top of the second before DJ Perron hit a bases clearing triple to put the Sea Unicorns in front.
Hart found his groove after that, retiring seven in a row and nine out of ten to finish his outing. He finished with a final line of 4 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, and 4 Ks.
The Bees’ bats were buzzing early, as New Britain scored 10 runs in the first four innings. Garrett Scavelli (Molloy University/ Franklin Square, NY) reached base in all five of his plate appearances with three hits and two walks. Molinaro had four hits and two RBIs.
After falling down 6-2, the Bees chipped away scoring one in the bottom of the second. In the third, an RBI double from Gavin Greger (UConn/Bristol, CT) and a throwing error on a double play ball combined to get New Britain three runs and tie the game at six.
In the bottom of the fourth, Scanlon belted his grand slam deep into right field to put the Bees in front for good at 10-6.
The Sea Unicorns answered right away with three runs in the fifth, as a bases loaded balk by Jason Johnson (St. Josephs ME/Thomaston,CT) was followed by consecutive RBI groundouts by Norwich.
There were plenty of extra base hits to go around for the Bees, as Freddy Forgione (SUNY Maritime/Ronkonkoma, NY) and Scanlon each had doubles and CJ Brito-Trinidad (Bowdoin/South Kent, CT) tripled off the left field wall.
After the three run fifth, Johnson, Zach Karson (Florida Southern/Cos Cob, CT) and Chris Gibbs (Mitchell College/New Britain, CT) combined to hold the Sea Unicorns scoreless the rest of the way. Johnson was credited with the win and Gibbs got his first save of the season.
The Bees are back in action again tomorrow as they welcome the Worcester Bravehearts to New Britain Stadium for a 1:35 p.m. start looking to advance to 5-0 on the season.
