(NEW BRITAIN, CT) – It was a packed house for some Saturday night baseball as 2,856 fans filled New Britain Stadium as the Bees hosted the Vermont Lake Monsters. The Bees fell to the Lake Monsters 7-6.
The Bees got things started early as they plated four runs in the second inning. Matt DeRosa (Quinnipiac Univ./North Haven, CT) roped a single into left-field scoring both Craig Corliss (UMass - Boston/Hopkinton, MA) and Colton Shaw (Yale Univ./Richardson, TX). One batter later Teddy Schoenfeld (M.I.T./Boulder, CO) laced a single up the middle scoring Gavin Greger (UConn/Bristol, CT) making it 3-0. DeRosa scored on a wild pitch extending New Britain’s lead to 4-0 in the second.
Vermont was able to add three runs in the top of the fourth, cutting New Britain’s lead to just one run. Just one inning later Jimmy Evans (Tufts/Norwalk, CT) hit a two-run homer to give Vermont a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom half of the fifth the Bees were able to get the bases loaded and were able to plate Schoenfeld and Jake Williams (Yale Univ./Murrysville, PA) on an error as Vermont tried to turn a double play. The Bees took a 6-5 lead.
Vermont tied the game up 6-6 when the bases were loaded and Davis Hanson (Yale Univ./Winston Salem, NC) hit Cam Conley (Pepperdine/Lincoln University, PA), scoring George Cooper (Harvard/Los Angeles, CA).
Vermont’s Colby Brouillette (Clarkson/Georgia, VT) was able to give the Lake Monsters the lead in the top eighth with a sac-fly that scored Jackson Kline (Kansas/Kansas City, MO) making it 7-6.
Mick Kelley (Yale Univ./San Francisco, CA) was a bright spot for the Bees pitching staff going three strong innings, three strikeouts, zero runs while not allowing a hit to Vermont hitters.
The Bees travel to Vermont to take on the Lake Monsters tomorrow, June 5th at 5:05 P.M. The Bees are back home Tuesday, June 7th at 6:35 P.M. to take on the Brockton Rox. Tuesday’s game will also feature $1 Martin Rosol hotdogs.
