Starfires Sweep Final Series Against the Bees

NEW BRITAIN, C.T. -- The Bees fell to the Westfield Starfires on Friday night 8-1 in a game where the Starfires had complete control of the Bees from inning one, all the way to the end of the game.  The Bees scored their only run of the game in the ninth inning.

The Starfires got on the board early tonight when Anthony Porrino (Sacred Heart University) hit a single that scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning.  Westfield added onto their lead in the fourth inning with Drew DeMartino (University of Hartford) hitting a solo home run, his second of the season, to put the Starfires on top 2-0.  They extended their lead in the fourth inning with a Braydon Seaburg (Quinnipiac University) single that drove in another run giving Westfield a three run lead over New Britain.

The Starfires used a couple sacrifice flies and a single from Devin Kellogg (University of Hartford) to continue adding onto their already big lead over New Britain.  Moving to the eighth inning with Westfield leading 7-0, an error and then a wild pitch allowed Anthony Porrino to come from first base all the way home and score, giving Westfield their final run of the evening.  The Bees did tack on one run though in the top of the ninth inning when Matt Donlan (Stonehill College) hit a solo home run, his second of the season, to prevent the shutout in Westfield’s favor.

The Bees started Alex Price (Middlebury College) who pitched five innings and gave up six runs on ten hits, while also striking out seven and walking just one batter.  Tommy Hughes (Southern CT State University), Ben Talbot (Holy Cross), and David Stiehl (Northeastern) also pitched for New Britain tonight out of the bullpen.

The Starfires started Chase Jeter (Sacred Heart University) who had his best start of the season by far, pitching 8.2 innings and giving up one run on six hits, while also striking out 12 and walking none.  He recorded his third win of the season.

The Bees fall to 13-22 on the season, while the Starfires improve to 16-19.  New Britain travels to Brockton for their final game against the Rox on Saturday. First pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. from Campanelli Stadium.
