Sloppy Blue Crabs Defense Opens The Door For A Bees Victory

Carkuff Dominates On The Mound To Notch His First Atlantic League Win

(Waldorf, MD– September 14, 2018) – The New Britain Bees (28-33, 61-63) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (22-39, 48-76) 5-1 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Friday evening to even up the season-ending four game series at a victory apiece.

New Britain starting pitcher Jared Carkuff (1-0) tallied his first ever victory in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball after allowing just one run on four hits in seven innings pitched, walking and striking out a pair of batters. Southern Maryland starting pitcher David Wayne Russo (3-7) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs (four earned runs) on nine hits across four and one-third innings of work, walking five while striking out two and tossing a wild pitch.

For the second consecutive night, the Bees scored in the first inning of play, tallying three runs on four hits to open up a 3-0 advantage, helped out by three of the four Blue Crabs errors committed in the contest. Jason Rogers had the big blow in the frame when he plated Jonathan Galvez by way of an RBI double into the left field corner, the 25th two-base hit and 64th rib-eye steak on the season for the 2018 Liberty Division All-Star. New Britain made it 4-0 in their favor in the top half of the third inning when Vinny Siena registered the tail end of back-to-back- one-out doubles that scored Ryan Wagner. The visitors gave the game its final score of 5-1 in the top of the fourth thanks to an Angelo Songco sacrifice fly that allowed Jason Rogers to cross the plate after Rogers collected his second double of the ballgame with one man down. The rest of the evening belonged to Carkuff, as the hard throwing right-hander concluded his start on the bump by retiring 14 of the final 17 batters he faced.
