Songco’s Go-Ahead Blast Is His First In A New Britain Uniform
(Central Islip, NY– September 5, 2018) – The New Britain Bees (24-28, 57-58) defeated the Long Island Ducks (32-21, 62-54) 4-3 at Bethpage Ballpark on Wednesday night to even up the three-game midweek series at a victory apiece.
New Britain starting pitcher Devin Burke (4-2) picked up the victory after allowing three runs on five hits (three home runs) across six innings pitched, walking two and striking out five while hitting a batter, tallying his third quality start of the campaign. Long Island starting pitcher Lorenzo Barcelo (2-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs on six hits (one home run) in six innings on the bump, striking out five. Evan Scribner fired a scoreless bottom of the ninth for his team-best 22nd save of the season.
New Britain took a 1-0 lead versus Barcelo in the top half of the second inning by way of a Jonathan Galvez sacrifice fly that allowed Jason Rogers to cross the plate after Rogers singled to open up the frame. Long Island jumped out in front 2-1 in the home half of the fourth thanks to solo home runs by Taylor Ard and Ramon Cabrera. The Bees regained the lead 4-3 in the top of the sixth with some clutch two-out hitting as Rogers drove in Darren Ford with an RBI base knock to left field after Ford led off with a single and later moved up into scoring position with his team-leading 34th stolen base. Next up was Angelo Songco, and he burned his old ballclub by launching his first big fly in a Hardware City jersey, a go-ahead two run shot to right, the third tater overall for the former Long Island Ducks player. David Washington’s solo homer in the bottom of the sixth cut New Britain’s lead in half at 4-3, but that was as close as the home team would get, as the relief quartet of Chris Reed, Sammy Gervacio, Brandon Cunniff, and Scribner did not allow a run in three innings on just three hits given up, striking out five. Rogers led the offensive attack with three hits, while Ford registered two hits on the evening, giving the teammates 32 multi-hit performances in 2018, tops on the ballclub. The Bees return to New Britain Stadium to begin their final homestand of the regular season on Friday, September 7th when they welcome in the 2018 First Half Freedom Division Champion Sugar Land Skeeters for a three-game weekend series.
