Todd Petersen Sends Everyone Home Happy With Walk-Off Home RunNEW BRITAIN, C.T. -- The Bees sting again. Down one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, Todd Petersen (UConn), who had been out of the lineup for the last five games, decided to end things in his own fashion smacking a three run home run to left field and giving the Bees their second walk-off win of the season. The Bees were able to make some noise early on with a three run first inning that put starting pitcher Joe Mancini (Boston College) in a very comfortable position on the mound. Griffin Arnone (Elon University) hit a double that drove home the first run of the night for New Britain. Noah Martinez (Central CT State University) then followed that up with a 2-RBI single of his own to give the Bees a three run lead over the Bravehearts. The Bravehearts began to crawl back though, leading off in the top of the second inning when Ben McNeil (NYIT) hit a solo home run to left-center field and cut the Bees lead to just two runs. McNeil would add some more insurance in the top of the third inning hitting another solo home run, his fifth of the season, to bring Worcester within just one run. The Bees bounced right back though with a home run of their own, a Derek Tenney (University of Hartford) solo blast, his second home run of the season to give the Bees a 4-2 lead heading into the fifth inning. The home runs just continued to come in this game when in the top of the fifth inning, Ben Rice (Dartmouth College) hit a solo home run of his own, a league leading 10th of the season to cut the Bees lead to just one. The Bravehearts then used two sacrifice flies in the sixth and eighth inning to grab a 5-4 lead over New Britain. This is when the madness began. Bottom nine. Two runners on base. Two outs. 0-2 count. Say goodbye. Todd Petersen hit a massive home run over the left-center field wall to give the Bees a 7-5 victory over the Bravehearts in walk-off fashion. This was Petersen’s second home run of the season, and definitely the most important one all year. The Bees started Joe Mancini who pitched four innings and gave up three runs on three hits, while also striking out four Worcester batters. Brad Lombardi (Boston College), Ryan Doherty (Manhattan College), and Kyle Menaker (University at Albany) all saw some action on the mound with Menaker recording his first win of the season. The Bravehearts started Eric Chavarria (Lewis Clark State) who pitched five innings and gave up four runs on six hits, while also striking out seven batters. Sebastian Gruszecki (Franklin Pierce) received the loss after giving up the home run to Petersen. The Bees improve to 12-19 on the season, while the Bravehearts drop to 18-11. New Britain will be home to face the Nashua Silver Knights for the final of a three game home stand Tuesday night. First pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. from New Britain Stadium.
