Bees Lose Both Games of Doubleheader to Rox

NEW BRITAIN, C.T. -- The Bees traveled to Brockton for a doubleheader with the Rox on Tuesday and fell just short in both games.  The first game was back and forth with lots of scoring until the Rox came out on top with a walk-off home run.  The second game went into a home run derby but with the Rox winning in the first round.

Starting in the first game, the Rox started with scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to get an early lead on the Bees.  Joel Lara was leading off and hit a solo home run, his first of the season, which began the scoring spurt for Brockton.  Moving to the second inning, the Bees were able to trim the Brockton lead by a two run home run from Noah Martinez, his second of the season.  The Rox came right back with another solo home run of their own by Jared Studley in the bottom half of the inning.  They led New Britain 5-2 after the first two innings.

In the top of the third, the Bees used a six run inning to take a commanding lead on the Rox.  It started off with Andrew Cain hitting a single to right field and bringing in the first run of the inning.  Noah Martinez then did the same with bases loaded and drove home another run.  The next batter, Ryan Bagdasarian, did the exact same as Cain and Martinez, hitting a single and this time scoring two runs.  The Bees would hit two more sacrifice flies to cap off the six runs and take an 8-5 lead over Brockton.

The New Britain lead would not last much longer as Brockton would snatch it right back.  A bases loaded walk and single from Buddy Dewaine brought in four runs in the bottom of the third inning and the Rox took the lead again, 9-8.  The two teams were tied at 10 entering the final inning and after the Bees were unable to score, the Rox wasted no time with Jake Gelof hitting a walk-off solo home run to win the first game of the doubleheader, 11-10.

Moving to the second game of the day, there was much less scoring but lasted much longer with the game going into a home run derby.  The Rox scored their only run in the bottom of the first inning when Joel Lara was able to advance home and score off an error from New Britain’s catcher.  The Bees tied the game in the top of the third inning with an error as well from Brockton’s pitcher allowing Todd Petersen to score from second base.

The scoring would end after that and the game went into a home run derby, the second time the Bees participated in one in the last three days.  On Sunday, the derby lasted all three rounds but this time there would only be one.  Tony Socci hit four home runs for the Bees, but Jake Gelof, the hero of the first game, would hit five home runs and finish off the doubleheader sweep.

For New Britain, Josh Vincent started the first game pitching only three innings and giving up ten runs on nine hits, while also walking seven batters and striking out just one.  In the second game, Drew Mead started and pitched a much longer outing, going six innings giving up just one run on four hits, and striking out seven batters.

The Bees now stand at 6-15 on the season, while the Rox improve to 10-9.  New Britain returns home on Wednesday night to face the Worcester Bravehearts.  First pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Click Here For Tickets.
