NEW BRITAIN, C.T. -- There it is.
The Bees scored 14 runs on Wednesday night against the Rox to get back in the win column, but tonight they only needed one, and it happened in the most exciting way possible. Andrew Cain (University of New Haven) who had been New Britain's hottest hitter all season went opposite field with two outs and two runners on base to bring the first and final run of the day.
The game was full of pitching and defense throughout with only nine total hits between the two teams in the first nine innings of play. The starting pitchers were sitting down batter after batter and the defense was there to back it up. Newly signed pitcher Ben Casparius (UConn) got the start for New Britain tonight and, although his pitch count was limited, threw three innings giving up only one hit and striking out five batters. For Brockton, Nick Sinacola (University of Maine) went seven innings and gave up only three hits while striking out eight.
The eighth inning saw both teams have big opportunities to score, first with Brockton who had runners on first and second with no outs. Kyle Menaker (University at Albany) came in and after making an error to load the bases, he was able to retire the next three batters and was pumped walking off the field into the dugout. A similar situation with the Bees in the bottom half of the inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but a fly out to center field ended the inning still with no runs for either team.
In the top of the 10th inning, the Rox had bases loaded with only one out when Buddy Dewaine hit a high ball to center field which was caught by Ryan Bagdasarian (Eastern CT State University). Colin Plante (University of Maine) tried tagging up from third base but was gunned out at the plate, a one hop throw from Bagdasarian to complete the double play.
Moving to the bottom of the 10th inning, Danniel Rivera (Southern New Hampshire) hit a slow single to second base that he was able to beat out and give the Bees a runner. After a Mike Caruso (Fairfield University) walk and Noah Martinez (Central CT State University) strike out, Andrew Cain, who had been New Britain's best hitter to this point, stepped up to the plate with two outs and two runners on base. Down to his last strike, Cain smacked a ball down the right field line that just stayed fair and gave enough time for Rivera to score from second and give the Bees the walk-off win. Cain had been hitless in the two games with Brockton but in his last chance was able to connect on an opposite field hit. This was the first walk off win for New Britain all season.
The Bees had five different players pitch throughout the game with Menaker going the longest, throwing two innings and three strikeouts. Ben Talbot (Holy Cross) pitched in the 10th inning and picked up his first win of the season. Jack Fox (Emerson College) received the loss for Brockton after pitching in the ninth and tenth inning giving up the only run, but striking out five Bees batters.
The Bees improve to 5-11 on the season, and the Rox fall back to under .500 at 7-8. New Britain will play their second of a two game home stand Saturday night against the top team in the Futures League, the Worcester Bravehearts.
