Walton Registers A Pair Of Hits And Drives Home Three Runs
(Lancaster, PA– June 14, 2018) – The New Britain Bees (20-24) defeated the Lancaster Barnstormers (28-14) 7-3 at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Thursday evening to complete a three-game midweek series sweep against the team with the best overall record in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
New Britain starting pitcher Rainy Lara tallied a no-decision in the ballgame, giving up three runs (two earned runs) on five hits (two home runs) in six innings on the mound, striking out four. Lancaster starting pitcher Tommy Shirley also did not factor in the game’s final outcome after surrendering three runs on eight hits across four and two-thirds innings pitched, walking four and striking out three.
New Britain batted around in the top half of the first inning, scoring three runs on four hits for a 3-0 cushion, highlighted by three consecutive two-out run-scoring singles from Josh Thole, Jonathan Galvez, and Jamar Walton. Lancaster fought their way back with single runs in the second, fourth, and six innings to knot the contest up at three, which is where the score remained heading into the top of the ninth. With Barnstormers closer Matt Reynolds coming on for his second relief appearance in as many nights after blowing his first save of the season last evening, Darren Ford greeted Reynolds rudely, launching the first pitch he saw from the southpaw over the left field wall for a go-ahead solo home run, his fourth roundtripper of the season. Later in the frame three more runs came across by way of a bases loaded walk issued to Galvez and a two-run base knock produced by Walton as the crooked number put up by the visitors gave the game its final score of 7-3, handing Reynolds (0-1) the loss while enabling Josh Outman (1-1) to pick up the victory in relief.
