Road Warriors Outlast Bees In A Slugfest

Comeback Falls Short Despite Romero’s Three-Run Blast

(New Britain, CT– May 29, 2018) – The Atlantic League’s Road Warriors (8-21) defeated the New Britain Bees (10-19) 9-8 at New Britain Stadium on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game midweek series between Liberty Division foes.

New Britain starting pitcher Andy Van Hekken registered a no-decision in the ballgame, allowing five runs (two earned runs) on eight hits in five innings pitched, striking out one. Road Warriors starting pitcher Brandon Bargas also did not factor in the game’s final outcome after surrendering five runs on five hits (one home run) across three innings of work, walking and striking out two while tossing a wild pitch. Andrew Johnston pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the bottom of the ninth for his third save of the season.

Trailing 4-1 in the home half of the third inning, the Bees scored four runs to take a 5-4 advantage, highlighted by a three-run home run to left field off the bat of Deibinson Romero, his team-best fifth home run of the campaign. The slugging infielder also leads the club in runs batted in with 20. With the game tied at five in the bottom of the fifth, New Britain put up yet another crooked number, scoring three more runs to take an 8-5 lead by way of a sacrifice fly from Josh Thole who was making his debut in a Hardware City uniform, and a two-run double produced by Jason Rogers. New Britain’s bullpen was not able to preserve the lead the next half inning as the Road Warriors went ahead for good against losing pitcher Sam Gervacio (0-1) with four runs to give the game its final score of 9-8, culminated by a solo home run from Edwin Gomez and a go-ahead two-run shot by Gustavo Pierre, making a winner out of reliever Christian Flecha-Astacio (1-1). Romero led the offensive attack for the Bees with three more hits, his team-leading tenth multi-hit game of the year and fifth of the three-hit variety. Photo provided courtesy of Megan Murnane.
