Skeeters Take Series Opener From Bees

Second Consecutive Quality Start For Simon Despite The Loss

(New Britain, CT– May 25, 2018) – The Sugar Land Skeeters (17-9) defeated the New Britain Bees (9-17) 4-1 at New Britain Stadium on Friday evening in the opener of a three-game holiday weekend series in the Nutmeg State.

New Britain starting pitcher Kyle Simon (2-2) suffered the hard luck loss after allowing three runs on nine hits (one home run) in seven innings of work, striking out seven, tallying his second consecutive quality start. Sugar Land starting pitcher Tyler Levine registered a new decision in his 2018 debut on the mound after firing four scoreless innings on four hits surrendered, walking and striking out two.

Sugar Land took a 2-0 lead against Simon in the top half of the second inning on a two-out, two-run run-single off the bat of Alvaro Rondon that scored Denis Phipps and Barrett Barnes. The visitors made it 3-0 in their favor in the top of the fifth when Barnes launched a solo home run to left centerfield off Simon, his first roundtripper of the campaign. New Britain cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh when Deibinson Romero drove home Ozney Guillen with a two-out RBI base knock after Guillen led off the frame with a walk, Romero’s team-best 14th run driven home in 2018. That was as close as the Bees would get, as the bullpen quintet of winning pitcher Danny Reynolds (2-0), Kraig Sitton, Hunter Cervenka, Matt West, and Felipe Paulino picked up 15 outs in the ballgame, with Paulino shutting the door in the bottom of the ninth for his Atlantic League leading eighth save of the season.
