Bees Hang On To Take Series Opener Over Blue Crabs

Two Extra-Base Hits For Romero, Lara Notches First Win In Bees Uniform

(Waldorf, MD– May 21, 2018) – The New Britain Bees (7-15) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (7-15) 2-1 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Monday night to take the opener of a four-game series in the Old Line State.

New Britain starting pitcher Rainy Lara (1-2) won for the first time in a Bees uniform after firing five and two-thirds scoreless innings on the mound and just four hits allowed, walking and striking out three. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Daryl Thompson (2-2) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs on seven hits (one home run) across seven innings pitched, striking out eight. Tyler Higgins retired all three batters he faced in the bottom half of the ninth inning for his first save of the season.

New Britain took an immediate 1-0 lead versus Thompson just three batters into the ballgame when Reid Brignac plated Deibinson Romero with an RBI double after Romero preceded Brignac with a two-base hit of his own. Romero was at it once again offensively in the top half of the third inning when he made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors by way of a leadoff solo home run over the wall in left centerfield. Southern Maryland cut the deficit to 2-1 in the home half of the eighth inning on a solo blast to left off the bat of Teodoro Martinez with one man down against Manny Delcarmen, but Delcarmen settled down after the roundtripper to preserve the one-run advantage by retiring Frank Martinez and Devon Rodriguez on a pair of groundouts consecutively, stranding the tying-run at first base. There was no comeback in the cards for the Blue Crabs on this evening, as Higgins came out of the New Britain bullpen and retired the side in order enabling New Britain to win their fourth straight game inside Regency Furniture Stadium dating back to the 2017 campaign. Romero, Brignac, and Jason Rogers led the way for the Bees with a pair of hits each. Photo provided courtesy of Megan Murnane.
