Rogers Hits Home Run In His First Bees At-Bat
(New Britain, CT– May 17, 2018) – The Lancaster Barnstormers (13-5) defeated the New Britain Bees (5-13) 8-4 at New Britain Stadium on Thursday evening to complete a three-game sweep of the midweek series in the Hardware City.
New Britain starting pitcher Mark Hamburger (1-2) suffered the loss, giving up six runs on eight hits over four innings pitched while tossing a wild pitch and hitting two batters. Lancaster starting pitcher Tommy Shirley (3-0) earned the victory after he allowed three runs on seven hits (three home runs) in five innings on the mound, walking two and striking out four while also throwing a wild pitch.
Lancaster took a 1-0 lead against Hamburger in the top half of the first inning when Blake Gailen drove home Darian Sandford with an RBI single. The visitors made it 4-0 in their favor in the top of the second on a run-scoring double by Rico Noel and a two RBI sacrifice fly off the bat of Sandford, as the second run in Noel hustled home all the way from second base. New Britain got to within 4-1 versus Shirley in the home half of the second on a solo home run to left off the bat of Jason Rogers in his first plate appearance in a Bees uniform. Trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the third, the Bees got back-to-back solo home runs from Deibinson Romero and Reid Brignac to cut the deficit to 5-3 as Brignac launched his first roundtripper in a Hardware City jersey and extended his on-base streak to a team-high 14 consecutive games overall. Romero’s third hit of the night was a run-scoring base knock in the middle of the eighth to get New Britain to within 8-4, but that was as close as they would get as the Barnstormers were able to hang on and complete the sweep. Romero led the way for the Bees with three hits on the night. Photo provided courtesy of Joe Doll.
