Skeeters Defeat Bees In Series Finale

Guillen Reaches Base Three Times

(Sugar Land, TX– May 2, 2018) – The Sugar Land Skeeters (6-0) defeated the New Britain Bees (0-6) 4-3 at Constellation Field on Wednesday evening in the final game of a six-game season-opening series and road trip for the boys from the Hardware City.

New Britain starting pitcher Rainy Lara tallied a no-decision in the ballgame, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings pitched, walking one while striking out two and surrendering a home run and a wild pitch. Sugar Land starting pitcher Mitch Talbot also did not factor in the game’s final outcome after firing five scoreless innings on just three hits, walking and striking out one.

Sugar Land took an early 2-0 lead against Lara in the bottom half of the second inning on a two-out, two-run home run by Courtney Hawkins, his second roundtripper of the series after collecting an inside the park home run on opening night off Andy Van Hekken, the first of such in the seven year history of Constellation Field and the second in Skeeters franchise history. New Britain responded with three unanswered runs in the top of the eighth for a 3-2 advantage. Ozney Guillen and Tony Abreu each crossed the plate on two separate throwing errors made by Skeeters reliever Dan Runzler, who left the game due to injury. With the contest al knotted at two, Deibinson Romero gave the visitors the lead when he laced a run-scoring base knock that scored James Skelton. In the bottom of the frame, Sugar Land went back on top 4-3 on a game-tying RBI single off the bat of Matt Chavez and a go-ahead run-scoring single off the bat of Albert Cordero with two down, all versus losing pitcher Manny Delcarmen (0-1). The Bees threatened in the top of the ninth, but Felipe Paulino was able to shut the door on New Britain’s hope for a comeback to notch his first save of the campaign, making a winner of Kyle Winkler (1-0) out of the bullpen.
