Sam Gervacio, Wally Backman, And Pete Incaviglia All Ejected In 5th Inning
(Sugar Land, TX– April 30, 2018) – The Sugar Land Skeeters (4-0) defeated the New Britain Bees (0-4) 3-1 at Constellation Field in the fourth of a six-game season opening series in the Lone Star State.
New Britain starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on four hits in three innings on the mound, walking three. Sugar Land starting pitcher Tyler Badamo (0-1) earned the victory after firing five scoreless innings on three hits allowed, walking one and striking out five. Paco Rodriguez closed the game out in the top half of the ninth inning for his second save in as many tries on the 2018 campaign.
Sugar Land took an early 3-0 lead against Pettibone in the home half of the third inning by sending eight men to the plate, highlighted by a two-run single from Derek Norris and an RBI base knock off the bat of Albert Cordero. In the bottom half of the fifth, Sam Gervacio relieved Brandon Fry who had to leave the game due to an undisclosed injury, and the first pitch Gervacio threw hit Matt Chavez, resulting in both benches and bullpens emptying. When the dust settled, Gervacio was ejected, along with Bees manager Wally Backman and Skeeters skipper Pete Incaviglia. New Britain scratched a run across in the top of the ninth against Rodriguez to cut the deficit to 3-1 when Darren Ford hustled home from third base on a passed ball after leading off the frame with a triple that rolled all the way to the wall in right centerfield. Rodriguez would finish the game off in impressive fashion by striking out Deibinson Romero swinging on the tenth pitch of the at-bat with the right-handed hitting slugger representing the tying-run as the Skeeters won their fourth consecutive game to begin 2018. Romero led the way for the Bees with a pair of hits, and has now hit safely in all four games played on the young season .Photo provided courtesy of Megan Murnane.
