Four Total Errors Prove Costly as Bees Drop Second Loss of the Season

(NEW BRITAIN, C.T., July 7th 2020) -- The New Britain Bees fell to the Westfield Starfires on Tuesday night, 6-4 in a game where defense was not at its best.  Both teams combined for a total of seven errors, with New Britain committing four.  The first hit came in the bottom of the fourth by an Andrew Cain double, but both teams struggled to get hits early on.

The Bees struck first when Andrew Cain (University of New Haven) reached first base on an overthrow by Westfield’s third baseman, Ramon Jimenez (Boston College), allowing Zach Donahue (UCONN) to score and give New Britain the lead. Later on in the fourth inning, Mike Caruso (Fairfield University) hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Noah Martinez (Central Connecticut State University) was able to tag up from third and score the second run of the game for the Bees.

The Starfires remained hitless until the fifth inning when Mark Coley (University of Rhode Island) snapped that drought and hit a two run home run into left field and tied the game at two a piece.  The bats continued to stay hot for Westfield the rest of the game, scoring one run in each of the last four innings.  Drew DeMartino (University of Hartford) led the way for the Starfires hitting two doubles and adding on two RBI’s in the 6th and 9th innings.

Trailing by three runs, New Britain attempted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning tacking on one run thanks to a Matthew Bertochi (Central Connecticut State University) RBI single, but the Bees would fall short in the end.

New Britain’s starting pitcher, Emmet Sheehan (Boston College), pitched only two innings and struck out six batters while walking four.  Grant Purpura (Pace University), Brad Lombardi (Boston College), Yanni Orfanidis (St. Thomas Aquinas), and Joe Mancini (Boston College) all saw action in today’s game, with Purpura receiving the loss after giving up three runs over three innings.

The Navigators started Nick Dombkowski (University of Hartford) who pitched 3.2 innings and gave up only two runs with four strikeouts and two walks.  Carter Cousins (Georgetown University) picked up the win, with LT Pare (Merrimack College) collecting the save despite a scare in the bottom of the ninth.

The Bees travel for their first road game of the season Wednesday night to face the Nashua Silver Knights.  The Silver Knights are 1-3 in the 2020 campaign after picking up their first win of the season against the Rox Tuesday night.  First pitch set for 6:00 p.m.
