Seventh Quality Start For Burke, Jackson Drives Home Four Runs
(New Britain, CT – September 5, 2019) – The New Britain Bees (27-26, 62-60) defeated the Somerset Patriots (19-35, 61-63) 7-4 at New Britain Stadium on Thursday night to conclude a four-game sweep of their Liberty Division foes as the boys from the Hardware City notched their sixth straight victory in the process.
New Britain starting pitcher Devin Burke (3-5) tallied the win after allowing three runs on nine hits (one home run) in six innings on the mound, walking one and striking out five as the right-hander was able to pick up his team-leading seventh quality start of the season. Somerset starting pitcher Tyler Cloyd (0-3) suffered the loss, giving up seven runs on nine hits in just four innings of work, walking one while striking out a pair of batters. Grant Black struck out the side in the top half of the ninth for his first ever save in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
Down 2-0 in the bottom of the third, New Britain got even versus Cloyd thanks to a run-scoring base knock by Darren Ford that plated Rando Moreno after he led off the frame with a double and an RBI two-base hit to left centerfield off the bat of Ryan Jackson that allowed Ford to cross the plate. Trailing 3-2 in the last of the fourth, New Britain went ahead for good as they batted around and scored five times to take their first lead of the night 7-3, highlighted by back-to-back RBI singles from Moreno and Ford, along with a bases-clearing three-run double to the opposite-field in right center by Jackson as the Bees infielder collected his fourth multi-RBI game in a Hardware City uniform and the first of the four rib-eye steak variety while also registering his 12th multi-hit performance since joining the ballclub. Somerset looked to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh as they cut the deficit to 7-4 by drawing four consecutive free passes against reliever Sammy Gervacio, who was then lifted by skipper Goose Gozzo as he called upon Brandon Fry to put out the fire, and the southpaw answered the bell in a big way by retiring all three batters he faced, striking out Jimmy Paredes and Edwin Espinal swinging and then inducing Gabriel Bracamonte to bounce into a fielder’s choice to Ozzie Martinez at third base. The bullpen duo of newcomers in Dakota Smith and Black did the rest by picking up the final six outs with a scoreless inning apiece as the Bees triumphed for the 17th time in their last 24 games played while remaining unbeaten in the month of September at 5-0.
