Rogers Extends On-Base Streak
(Central Islip, NY – July 25, 2019) – The Long Island Ducks (6-7, 49-34) defeated the New Britain Bees (5-8, 40-42) 9-1 at Bethpage Ballpark on Thursday evening to salvage the finale of a four-game midweek series between intra-division foes.
New Britain starting pitcher Jed Bradley (3-6) suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs on nine hits across five and two-thirds innings pitched, walking a single-game season-high seven and striking out three. Long Island starting pitcher Darin Downs (3-2) gave up just one run on four hits over seven innings pitched en route to the victory, walking one while striking out nine and committing a balk.
New Britain jumped out in front 1-0 in the top half of the second inning by way of a ground ball out with one man down off the bat of Rando Moreno that plated Jared James who led off the frame with a single versus Downs, extending his hitting streak to seven consecutive games overall, matching a season-best for the speedy lefty who last accomplished the feat from May 18th-May 26th. In the last of the third the Ducks took their first advantage of the night 2-1 and never looked back thanks to an Ezequiel Carrera fielder’s choice and a run-scoring base knock from D’Arby Myers, the first of his three rib-eye steaks in the ballgame. Long Island took a commanding 6-1 lead in the home half of the fourth, batting around against Bradley as John Apostolo drove in a run with a single, Carrera drew a bases loaded free pass, and Myers plated a pair with a base hit of his own. T.J. Rivera concluded the scoring in the middle of the sixth with a booming three-run home run off reliever Anthony Alicki that completely went out of Bethpage Ballpark, his second big fly of the season. With one out in the top of the sixth, Jason Rogers picked up an infield single for his lone hit of the ballgame and has now reached base safely a team-high 25 consecutive games overall.
