Late Inning Magic Propels Bees Over Rockers In Series Opener

Quality Start For Marzi, Bullpen Trio Solid Once Again

(New Britain, CT– May 24, 2019) – The New Britain Bees (12-13) defeated the High Point Rockers (17-10) 5-4 at New Britain Stadium on Friday evening in the opener of a three-game Memorial Day Weekend series in the Nutmeg State and the first ever matchup in franchise history between the two ballclubs in the Hardware City. The Bees have now won three consecutive games and five of their last six overall.

New Britain starting pitcher Anthony Marzi tallied a no-decision despite his second quality start of the campaign, allowing three runs on six hits (one home run) in six innings pitched, walking one while striking out nine (a single-game season-high) and hitting a batter. High Point starting pitcher Joe Van Meter also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, surrendering two runs on two hits in three innings of work while walking two and striking out one but had to leave the game in the bottom half of the fourth inning after just two batters faced in the frame due to injury. Jim Fuller shut the door in the ninth for his first save of the season.

High Point jumped out in front 2-0 just four batters in versus Marzi when Stephen Cardullo launched a two-run home run to left centerfield. The visitors made it 3-0 in their favor in the second by way of a run-scoring single off the bat of Giovanny Alfonzo. New Britain cut the deficit to 3-2 in the home half of the fourth thanks to a run-scoring base knock from Jared James that enabled Alejandro De Aza to cross the plate and a hit by pitch to Logan Moore with the bases loaded that scored Jason Rogers. The Bees got even in the fifth by way of a two-out, opposite field base knock to right from Jonathan Galvez that plated De Aza after he doubled with one man down. With the Rockers ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, New Britain scored twice off losing pitcher Brian Clark (1-1) to give the game its final score of 5-4 by way of an RBI single from Deibinson Romero and a pair of High Point errors. The rest was left up to the bullpen, as the trio of Michael Johnson, winning pitcher Brandon Fry (1-0), and Fuller allowed just an unearned run in three innings of relief. De Aza (team-high 13 game hitting streak), Rogers, and Romero led the way offensively with a pair of hits each. Photo provided courtesy of Joe Doll.
