Riordan Fires Complete Game In Opener, Rogers And Romero Go Yard In Nightcap

(Waldorf MD, – May 11, 2019) – The New Britain Bees (6-8) and Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (4-11) split a single-admission doubleheader at Regency Furniture Stadium on Saturday, with New Britain taking game one 4-1, while Southern Maryland was victorious in game two by a final of 10-8 as both contests lasted seven innings of play.

In game one, New Britain starting pitcher Cory Riordan (1-1) earned the complete game win after allowing just one run on four hits (one home run) in seven innings on the mound, walking one and striking out four. Southern Maryland starting pitcher John Hayes tallied a no-decision in the ballgame, tossing three scoreless innings on two hits given up, walking five and striking out one.

Down 1-0 in the top half of the sixth inning, the Bees went to work versus losing pitcher Ryan Chaffee (0-2), scoring three runs on three hits, highlighted by a bases clearing pinch-hit three-run double into the left field corner off the bat of Ozzie Martinez. The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Jared James plated Alejandro De Aza with an RBI base knock, giving the game its final score of 4-1 after De Aza singled to lead off the frame. James, Deibinson Romero, and Jonathan Galvez each had two hits apiece en route to the victory.

In game two, New Britain starting pitcher Anthony Marzi did not factor in the game’s final outcome, surrendering four runs on five hits (one home run) in four innings of work, walking two and striking out seven. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Tommy Thorpe left the game due to injury after facing just seven batters and giving up five runs (three earned runs) on three hits (two home runs) while walking one.

New Britain took an immediate 5-0 lead in the top half of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run to right centerfield by Jason Rogers, and a solo blast over the mini monster in left from Deibinson Romero. After Southern Maryland stormed all the way back with ten unanswered runs, the Bees scored three more times in the top of the sixth on back to back run-scoring groundouts by Tyler Clark and Alexi Amarista and an RBI single produced on the part of Rogers. That was as close as the boys from the Hardware City would get as Mat Latos closed a long day of baseball out with his first save of the season, making a winner out of Kevin Munson (1-0) while handing Kyle Simon (0-1) the loss. The Bees returns to the Hardware City on Tuesday, May 14th when they host the Lancaster Barnstormers at New Britain Stadium in the opener of a three-game midweek series. First pitch is slated for 6:35 P.M.
