Six Scoreless Innings For Friedrich Gives Him First Win In A Bees Uniform
(Waldorf, MD– May 10, 2019) – The New Britain Bees (5-7) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (3-10) 2-1 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Friday night in the opener of a four-game Mother’s Day Weekend series. The win for the Bees is their season-best third straight overall as they improve to 3-1 on their current seven-game, two-state road trip. The contest also included a rain delay of 41 minutes.
New Britain Starting Pitcher Christian Friedrich (1-1) notched his first ever victory in a Hardware City uniform after firing six scoreless innings on six hits allowed, walking one and striking out six and tossing a wild pitch. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Michael Kelly (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing one run on three hits across four innings of work, striking out two. Jose Rosario closed the ballgame out in the bottom half of the ninth inning for his second save of the season.
The Bees took a 1-0 lead versus Kelly in the top of the second when Jonathan Galvez drove home Deibinson Romero by way of a double into the left field corner after Romero led off the frame with a base knock right back through the originator into centerfield. The visitors made it 2-0 in their favor in the top of the sixth as Romero plated Alexi Amarista with a two-out run-scoring single after Amarista began the rally with a leadoff triple that went all the way to the wall in right centerfield, his first three-bagger of the campaign. Friedrich made the big pitch each and every time he needed to, with the biggest being his final one in the home half of the sixth as he induced Cory Vaughn to bounce into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play, the third twin-killing on the night turned by New Britain and their tenth in the last four games played. After allowing a run in the bottom of the ninth, Rosario settled in nicely and shut the door, striking out Edwin Garcia and Craig Maddox to end the game, stranding Vaughn in scoring position at second base who was representing the tying-run. Amarista and Romero led the way offensively with a pair of hits each. Photo provided courtesy of Joe Doll.
