Patriots Silence Bees Bats In Series Opener

Romero Homers In First Inning For Lone New Britain Run

(New Britain, CT– August 31, 2018) – The Somerset Patriots (28-21, 63-49) defeated the New Britain Bees (23-25, 56-55) 6-1 at New Britain Stadium on Friday evening in the opener of a three-game Labor Day weekend series in the Hardware City.

New Britain starting pitcher Devin Burke (3-2) suffered the loss after surrendering five runs (four earned runs) on six hits (one home run) across six innings pitched, walking three and striking out one. Somerset starting pitcher Stephen Perakslis (2-0) earned the win, giving up just one run on five hits (one home run) over six innings of work, walking one and striking out eight.

Somerset took a 1-0 lead versus Burke just three batters into the ballgame when Endy Chavez plated Justin Pacchioli by way of a sacrifice fly to right field after Pacchioli gave the keynote in the contest by lacing a single to centerfield and advancing into scoring position with his 30th stolen base in as many tries. The speedy leadoff batter was caught in a rundown between second and third base on a comebacker to Burke hit by Craig Massey but advanced on a throwing error made by the Bees pitcher. New Britain tied the game at one in the home half of the first frame when Deibinson Romero launched a solo home run to left off Perakslis as the Liberty Division All-Star and Home Run Derby Champion clocked his 16th tater of the season while driving in his 66th rib-eye steak, both tops on the ballclub. Somerset batted around in the top of the third, scoring four two-out runs to jump back out in front 5-1, highlighted by a go-ahead run-scoring single from Chavez, and a three-run home run to left off the bat of Jayce Boyd. The visitors added an insurance run in the top of the eighth to give the game its final score of 6-1 thanks to a Mike Fransoso RBI base knock that scored Boyd after he singled to begin the inning. The rest of the night belonged to the Somerset pitching staff, as the quartet of Perakslis, Jose Jose, Logan Kensing, and Dustin Antolin combined to limit the Bees to just five hits while striking out ten in the process. Five different New Britain batters had one hit apiece in the defeat. Photo provided courtesy of the New Britain Bees.
