Two Hits For Romero, Including A Home Run
(New Britain, CT– August 20, 2018) – The New Britain Bees (19-19, 52-49) defeated the Atlantic League’s Road Warriors (7-32, 24-78) 8-6 at New Britain Stadium on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series in the Nutmeg State.
New Britain starting pitcher Devin Burke (3-1) picked up the win after allowing five runs on eight hits in seven and one-third innings of work (his longest outing of the season), walking one and striking out six while tossing a wild pitch. Road Warriors starting pitcher Michael Lee (2-10) was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs on three hits (one home run) in just two and one-third innings on the mound, walking two and striking out one along with a pair of wild pitches and also hitting a batter. The right-hander left the ballgame in the bottom half of the third inning with one man out due to an undisclosed injury. Evan Scribner fired a clean top of the ninth frame for his team-best 21st save of the campaign.
New Britain took an immediate 3-0 lead versus Lee in the bottom of the first by way of an RBI infield single off the bat of Jason Rogers that scored James Skelton after he had a base knock with one out, a passed ball charged to Road Warriors backstop Ermindo Escobar that plated Deibinson Romero with the second run, and a sacrifice fly produced by Jonathan Galvez that allowed Rogers to cross the plate. The Bees took a 4-1 advantage in the bottom of the third thanks to a leadoff solo home run to left from Romero, his 13th roundtripper and 58th run batted in overall, both tops on the ballclub. The boys from the Hardware City extended their advantage to 6-2 in the home half of the sixth when Vince Conde drove in Jovan Rosa and Jamar Walton with a two-out, two-run double right off the chalk in left field, giving New Britain some much needed breathing room. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bees tacked on what proved to be a pair of giant-sized insurance runs to take a commanding 8-2 lead, highlighted by Skelton hustling down the line from third base on a wild pitch thrown by reliever Jose Ortega after Skelton led off the frame with a free pass, and a run-scoring double from Walton that scored Rogers. The visitors sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the eighth, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 8-6, but no comeback was in the cards for the Road Warriors as Scribner shut the door in the top of the ninth for his second save of the homestand, having now retired all six batters faced in his pair of relief outings.
