Rosa Extends Hitting And On-Base Streaks
(New Britain, CT– August 18, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks (23-14, 53-47) defeated the New Britain Bees (17-19, 50-49) 3-0 at New Britain Stadium on Saturday night to even up the three-game weekend series at a victory apiece. New Britain is held off the scoreboard in a ballgame for the tenth time this season.
New Britain starting pitcher Chris Reed (0-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up two runs on three hits (two home runs) in three innings pitched, striking out four. Long Island starting pitcher Hector Silvestre (1-0) picked up the win, firing six scoreless innings on five hits allowed, walking and striking out two. Francisco Rodriguez closed things out in the bottom half of the ninth inning for his 23rd save of the campaign.
Long Island took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the second inning by way of a two-out solo home run to left centerfield off the bat of Miles Williams, his second roundtripper with the bases empty in as many nights. The Ducks flexed their muscles once again in the top of the third to double their advantage to 2-0 when Dioner Navarro cracked a solo tater that just cleared the left field wall for his first home run in 2018. The visitors went out in front 3-0 in the top of the sixth as Daniel Fields hustled down the line from third base on a passed ball charged to Ryan Wagner after Fields opened up the frame with a double into the gap in left centerfield, his third two-base hit of the series. The New Britain bullpen quintet of Jim Fuller, Sammy Gervacio, Elvin Ramirez, Adam Loewen, and Matt Quintana (Bees debut) kept the home team within striking distance, allowing just an unearned run on four hits in six innings of work, striking out four. In his first at bat in the home half of the second, Jovan Rosa singled, extending his hitting streak to nine consecutive games (the longest active hit streak on the ballclub) and his on-base streak to 17 straight contests, both season-highs, while Darren Ford’s leadoff single in the bottom of the first stretched his on-base streak to a season-best 18 straight games overall. Wagner led the way for New Britain with a pair of hits en route to the loss. Photo provided courtesy of the New Britain Bees.
