Skeeters Pound Out 16 Hits To Take Rubber Game From Bees
Rogers Extends His On-Base Streak With Two More Hits
(New Britain, CT– July 26, 2018) – The Sugar Land Skeeters (11-5, 52-27) defeated the New Britain Bees (7-8, 40-38) 12-4 at New Britain Stadium on Thursday evening to take the rubber game of a three-game midweek series in the Hardware City.
New Britain starting pitcher Josh Outman (3-4) suffered the loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned runs) on nine hits (one home run) in five innings pitched, walking two while striking out three and hitting a pair of batters. Sugar Land starting pitcher James Russell (4-3) earned the win despite surrendering four runs on eight hits (one home run) across five and two-thirds innings on the bump, walking two and striking out five along with a wild pitch thrown.
Trailing 1-0 in the home half of the third inning, New Britain scored twice against Russell for a 2-1 lead on a two-run double off the bat of Jason Rogers, scoring Darren Ford and Brock Stassi after they reached on consecutive singles with Ford’s coming by way of the infield variety. Down 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Ford was at it once again as he gave the home team a 4-3 advantage when he cracked a two-run home run just over the wall in left versus Russell, his seventh big fly of the season. Sugar Land answered the bell in the top of the fifth inning against Outman, batting around and going ahead for good with five runs on six hits for a commanding 8-4 lead, highlighted by a go-ahead grand slam home run produced by Denis Phipps, the fifth consecutive Skeeters hit against Outman after the southpaw retired Juan Silverio on a fly ball to the centerfielder Ford to begin the frame as it marked the sixth time in 2018 in which Sugar Land has gone yard with the bases loaded. No comeback was in the cards for the Bees on this night, as the Skeeters bullpen quartet of Vicente Campos, Kraig Sitton, Jean Machi, and Felipe Paulino tossed three and a third innings of scoreless baseball, striking out three in the process. Ford and Rogers led the way for New Britain with two hits apiece as Ford extended his hitting streak to six consecutive games while Rogers has now reached base safely in nine straight contests.
