New Britain Hangs On To Defeat Southern Maryland In Series Finale

Simon Earns Sixth Win, Stassi And Wagner Each Hit First Home Run In A Bees Uniform

(New Britain, CT– July 15, 2018) – The New Britain Bees (3-3, 36-33) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (3-3, 29-40) 6-5 at New Britain Stadium on Sunday afternoon to salvage the finale of a three-game weekend series in the Hardware City. The matchup also included a rain delay of one hour and thirty minutes.

New Britain starting pitcher Kyle Simon (6-4) was victorious after giving up three runs on six hits (one home run) in five innings on the bump while walking two batters. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Casey Delgado (4-6) suffered the loss, allowing six runs (five earned runs) on four hits (two home runs) in just four innings pitched, walking four and striking out two. Evan Scribner fired a clean top half of the ninth inning for his team-leading 13th save of the season.

New Britain took a 1-0 lead versus Delgado in the bottom of the first when Deibinson Romero drove home Darren Ford by way of a sacrifice fly after Ford opened up the frame reaching base by way of a four pitch walk. The Bees went on top 3-0 in the home half of the second inning with the second run of the rally coming by way of an RBI base knock off the bat of Vinny Siena that allowed Ozney Guillen to cross the plate after he reached earlier on an infield single. The home team went ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the third when Brock Stassi launched a booming solo home run to right, his first big fly in a Bees jersey. In the bottom of the fourth the boys from the Hardware City took a commanding 6-0 advantage as Ryan Wagner tallied his first hit in a New Britain uniform in dramatic fashion, crushing a two-run home run to left. The Blue Crabs clawed their way back to within a single run at 6-5 but would not get any closer as Scribner shut the door on the visitors, enabling Simon to earn his sixth win of the campaign, tying him with Mark Hamburger and Zach Stewart for the most overall on the ballclub.
