Stan Cliburn returns as manager of the New Britain Bees for the 2017 season. He was named manager on December 15, 2015 and served as the first manager in the team’s history. During their inaugural season he led the team to a 71-69 record, notching his 1,600th career win as a manager and his 500th career win in New Britain along the way.
Cliburn was drafted by the California Angels in the 1974 MLB Amateur Draft. He spent 15 years in baseball as a catcher before becoming a coach, including 54 games at the major league level in 1980 with the Angels. He tallied a lifetime batting average of .255 with 76 home runs, 449 RBI and 405 runs scored. He began his coaching career in 1988 with the Watertown Pirates, the New York Penn League affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Since then, he has served as a manager in New Britain with both the Rock Cats (AA, Minnesota Twins) and the Bees for six seasons. He was also the manager for the Freedom division in the 2016 Atlantic League All-Star game, and the Rochester Red Wings (AAA, Twins) for four seasons.
Cliburn has managed over 3,200 career games, earning an all-time record of 1635-1623. He is entering his 27th season as a manager. The 60 year old Cliburn, native of Jackson, Mississippi, has managed 188 different players that have gone to the major leagues.
