Ducks Top Bees Before A Capacity Crowd

Three More Hits For Romero In Defeat

(New Britain, CT– May 9, 2018) – The Long Island Ducks (6-5) defeated the New Britain Bees (3-8) 7-4 at New Britain Stadium on Wednesday afternoon to even up the three-game midweek series at a victory apiece. The matchup between Liberty Division rivals was played before a sellout crowd of 6,247 fans on the first School Day game of the season.

New Britain starting pitcher Jonathan Pettibone registered a no-decision in the contest, surrendering four runs (three earned runs) on six hits over three and two-thirds innings of work, walking and striking out two. Long Island starting pitcher Matt Larkins also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings pitched, walking three and striking out seven.

Trailing 1-0 in the home half of the first inning, New Britain got even against Larkins when Ozney Guillen drew a bases loaded walk, enabling Jamar Walton to cross the plate with the tying-run after he reached base by way of a free pass earlier in the frame. The Bees got to within a single run at 3-2 in the bottom of the third on a sun-aided RBI double to left field off the bat of Angelys Nina that scored Reid Brignac after he picked up a two-out base knock to extend his hitting streak to seven consecutive games overall, matching Darren Ford for the team-high in 2018. With the home team trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth, New Britain tied the game at four on a two-out, two-run single by Deibinson Romero that plated Nate Irving and Ford. The ballgame took a dramatic change in the top of the seventh as Robert Garcia put Long Island ahead for good with a two-out, three-run inside the park home run on a sinking line drive to right field that could not be handled by Walton as it rolled all the way to wall, and in the blink of an eye the visitors enjoyed a 7-4 cushion while handing Rainy Lara the loss (0-1). It was the second inside the park home run given up by the Bees pitching staff in just 11 games played on the 2018 campaign, with the last coming on Opening Night at Constellation Field by way of Courtney Hawkins in a 2-1 victory for the Sugar Land Skeeters. The beneficiary of the at bat was winning pitcher Wander Perez (1-0), and Francisco Rodriguez made the wild turn of events pay off for the Ducks as he collected his first save in a Long Island uniform.
