Series: The series between the Bees and Blue Crabs began with an extra inning affair on Friday night, in which New Britain was victorious after scoring 4 times in the top of the 10th inning, 7-3. Southern Maryland evened the series with a 7-2 win last night, and the series will conclude this afternoon with a 2:05 P.M. scheduled start time.

The Bees: In yesterday’s game, New Britain starter Jonathan Pettibone ran into some early trouble, allowing a 3 run home run in the first inning, but pitched very well through most of his outing. He went 5 innings allowing 4 earned runs while striking out 3 batters, and retired 11 straight Southern Maryland batters at one point. Out of the bullpen, Brandon Fry and Mike Hepple each tossed scoreless frames. Jamar Walton was the story of the Bees offense, scoring twice and tallying 2 hits in the game.
The Opposition: After being defeated in game 1 of the series against the Bees, Southern Maryland did not hesitate to get their bats going. Zach Wilson went yard in the 1st off of Jonathan Pettibone, and the Blue Crabs never looked back. Luis Alen would hit a solo shot in the 5th inning as part of a 2 run frame, and they would add 2 more runs in the 8th to secure the 7-2 victory in game 2. Starting pitcher Pat McCoy went 5 1/3 innings only allowing 1 run off of 2 hits and striking out 7, but was forced to leave prematurely due to an apparent injury.

Key to the Game – Notes on Thompson: Southern Maryland starter Daryl Thompson has pitched 6 or more innings in each of his 8 starts this season except one, in which he pitched 5 against Bridgeport on May 19. If the pattern continues, the Bees will see a lot of him in today’s game, whether he has given up runs in the game or not. He has only had 1 scoreless outing, which was on May 24 against Lancaster when he threw 8 shutout innings. Look for the Bees to keep an extra eye on Thompson, get acquainted with his pitching style and use it to their advantage by putting up some runs in the middle of the game or towards the end of his outing.
