Power And Pitching Propel Bees To Third Consecutive Victory

Riordan Wins Fifth Game, Galvez And Carp Go Yard

(New Britain, CT – August 9, 2019) – The New Britain Bees (10-16, 45-50) defeated the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (14-13, 39-57) 13-4 at New Britain Stadium on Friday night in the opener of a three-game weekend series in the Nutmeg State.

New Britain starting pitcher Cory Riordan (5-6) picked up the win after allowing three runs on nine hits (one home run) in six and two-thirds innings pitched, walking and striking out two while also hitting a batter. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Michael Kelly (3-8) was tagged with the loss, surrendering eight runs (seven earned runs) on four hits (one home run) in just one and two-thirds innings on the mound, walking five and tossing a wild pitch.

New Britain took an immediate 4-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning courtesy of a grand slam home run off the scoreboard in left centerfield by 2019 Liberty Division All-Star Jonathan Galvez, his team-leading 15th big fly overall and the third home run this season hit by a Bees player with the bases loaded and first in the Hardware City, with the other two coming at Bethpage Ballpark versus the Long Island Ducks thanks to Alexi Amarista on May 19th and Logan Moore on June 26th. The Bees blew the game wide open in the last of the second, sending ten batters to the plate while scoring five more times in the process to take a commanding 9-1 advantage, highlighted by RBI base knocks from Galvez, Bijan Rademacher, and Mike Carp, along with a two-run single produced by Zach Collier. New Britain scored two more times in both the seventh and eighth frames for a 13-3 cushion thanks to a run-scoring fielder’s choice off the bat of Rando Moreno, an RBI base hit from 2019 Liberty Division All-Star Logan Moore, and a booming two-run tater to right by way of Carp, his second roundtripper in a Hardware City uniform. It was all smiles for the Bees and their faithful on this summer evening as New Britain snapped a season-high five game losing streak at home while the 15 hits marked the 35th time this year in which they have recorded ten or more hits in a single contest. The four-baggers from Galvez and Carp resulted in the 24th multi-home run game for New Britain on the campaign. Rademacher led the offensive attack with his first four-hit ballgame of the season.
