Bees Drop Saturday Night Marathon To Blue Crabs In 12 Innings
Galvez Ties Game In Ninth With Two-Out, Two-Run Tater
(Waldorf, MD– September 15, 2018) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (23-39, 49-76) defeated the New Britain Bees (28-34, 61-64) 4-3 in walk-off fashion in 12 innings at Regency Furniture Stadium on Saturday night and have now taken two of the first three game of a four-game season-ending series. The back and forth affair in Waldorf lasted four hours and sixteen minutes.
New Britain starting pitcher Tommy Thorpe registered a no-decision in the ballgame, allowing three runs on six hits in five innings pitched, walking four and striking out two. Southern Maryland starting pitcher Craig Stem also did not factor in the game’s final outcome, giving up just one run on five hits in six innings of work, walking one while striking out eight and tossing a wild pitch.
New Britain took a 1-0 lead versus Stem just four batters into the ballgame when Jason Rogers plated James Skelton with a run-scoring groundout after Skelton singled earlier in the frame with one man down. Three unanswered Southern Maryland runs put the Blue Crabs out in front 3-1 and the home team took that advantage all the way to the top half of the ninth inning with closer Cody Eppley on the bump. Down to their final out, Jamar Walton kept the game going with a clean single to centerfield. In stepped Jonathan Galvez, and the 2018 Liberty Division All-Star knotted the contest at three with a clutch two-run home run to left field, his 10th big fly of the campaign. The matchup remained deadlocked all the way to the home half of the 12th, when Ryan Strausborger began the magic with a leadoff single against losing pitcher Sammy Gervacio (0-4). After stealing second base, Strausborger advanced to third on a ground out to the right side of the infield off the bat of Edwin Garcia. An intentional walk to Devin Rodriguez put runners at the corners for the cleanup man Jon Griffin. With the winning run 90 feet away, Griffin did not even have to take the bat off his shoulder as Strausborger hustled down the line from third base with the winning run on a wild pitch thrown by Gervacio, making a victor out of Shane Watson (5-0) as the Blue Crabs walked off on the Bees for the second time in three nights.
