Patriots Hold Bees Offense In Check For Second Straight Night

Two More Hits For Rogers And Tuiasosopo

(Bridgewater Township, NJ– August 4, 2018) – The Somerset Patriots (18-8, 53-36) defeated the New Britain Bees (12-12, 45-42) 4-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday night and have now taken two of the first three games in the four-game series between intra-division rivals.

New Britain starting pitcher Mark Hamburger (6-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on six hits across seven innings pitched, walking three and striking out five while tossing a wild pitch. Somerset starting pitcher David Kubiak (8-2) picked up the victory by way of eight scoreless innings on the bump and just four hits allowed, walking one and striking out nine.

Somerset took a quick 1-0 lead against Hamburger in the home half of the first inning by way of two-out a run-scoring base knock off the bat of Jayce Boyd (his first run batted in as a member of the Patriots) that scored Alfredo Rodriguez after he reached base with an opposite-field double to right. The Patriots added three more runs in the bottom of the second, sending seven batters to the plate in the process to open up a 4-0 edge, highlighted by an RBI triple from Craig Massey followed by a sacrifice fly from Ramon Flores. Despite his early struggles, Hamburger finished the ballgame on an extremely high note, retiring 18 of the final 22 batters that he faced. New Britain’s offense had no answer for Kubiak, who opened up the contest erasing the first ten batters at the plate before Brock Stassi drew a one-out free pass in the top of the fourth that extended his on-base streak to a season-high 14 straight ballgames. The Bees scored their lone run in the top of the ninth inning when Matt Tuiasosopo plated Deibinson Romero with an RBI base hit after Romero singled with one man down. Tuiasosopo and Jason Rogers each had a pair of hits en route to the loss, with Rogers extending his hitting streak to six games in a row and Tuiasosopo increasing his on-base streak to eight straight contests.
