Early Inning Runs Propel Bees To Victory Over Road Warriors

Stassi Goes Yard As Part Of A Three-Hit Day

(New Britain, CT– July 31, 2018) – The New Britain Bees (10-10, 43-40) defeated the Atlantic League’s Road Warriors (3-17, 20-63) 5-3 at New Britain Stadium on a Tuesday afternoon Camp Day to even up the three-game series between Liberty Division rivals. The triumph concludes New Britain’s second consecutive winning month, as they close out July with an overall record of 13-11 after finishing June a league-best 18-10.

New Britain starting pitcher Josh Outman (4-4) picked up the win after allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings pitched, walking two while striking out six and hitting a batter. Road Warriors starting pitcher Kelvin Villa (3-8) suffered the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits (one home run) over the course of five innings of work, walking four, striking out three and tossing a wild pitch. Evan Scribner did not allow a run in the top half of the ninth inning as he closed the ballgame out by collecting his team-best 15th save of the campaign.

New Britain took an instant 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning versus Villa when Brock Stassi cracked a two-run home run to right field that also scored Darren Ford after he led off the frame with a single to centerfield. The big fly for Stassi was his fourth of the year and second tater in his last four games played as the left-handed batter immediately extending his hitting streak to seven consecutive games (the longest active hit streak on the ballclub) and on-base streak to ten straight contests. The Bees took a 5-1 advantage in the bottom of the third when they sent eight men to the plate against Villa, scoring three runs on four hits. After Stassi led off the frame with a base-knock to the opposite-field in left, Deibinson Romero followed with a double off the top of the left field wall, putting runners at second and third with nobody out. Jason Rogers joined the hit parade next with a two-run double that scored both Stassi and Romero, the 20th two-base hit on the season for the 2018 Liberty Division All-Star, who has also driven home a total of 48 runs. Four batters later, the crooked number was put up on the scoreboard by way of a Ryan Wagner sacrifice fly as he drove home Rogers to complete the big production on the part of the boys from the Hardware City. The rest of the day belonged to the New Britain bullpen, as the trio of Devin Burke, Adam Loewen, and Scribner fired four scoreless innings of relief on just one hit allowed, striking out six. Stassi was the offensive star as he led the way with three hits, his fifth three-hit game on the season and 15th multi-hit performance in just 32 games in a Hardware City uniform.
